"A Simple Act of Kindness Can Change The Course of a Lifetime."
3rd Grade Peek at the Week News December 12, 2011
Dear 3rd Grade Parents,
Please take a look at this week's highlights:
Vocabulary/Spelling: Unit 16 due on Wednesday. Quiz on Thursday for Vocabulary. Test on Friday for Spelling.
Reading: Using the essential skills of reading, we will begin to apply our knowledge through literary adaptation (the adapting of a literary source, i.e., short story, poem, novel, etc) to a stage play. Students will write their own versions of books they have recently read (Wayside School, Blue Dragonfly, or Terrible Trevor) into plays. They will learn how to recognize cause and effect, compare and contrast different characters, and distinguish fact from opinion.
English: We will review verbs in our parts of speech lesson and identify them as main words in predicates. We will also distinguish action verbs from helping verbs in our grammar review.
Math: An inspired lesson based on real world learning in Math, we began our week by witnessing a simple act of kindness. During our monthly fire drill Monday morning, Mr. Poyant asked the Irving firefighters if they could help us replace the rope in our flagpole by using their ladder. Students in Grades 1-8 gathered around the flagpole and looked on as one of our brave firefighters climbed up the 100ft ladder to unravel and replace the rope at the top of the 40 ft. flagpole. As we took pictures of the brave firefighter climbing up to do this, we witnessed community service at its best. Moving beyond that simple act of kindness, we returned to our classrooms and examined the pictures we took. Using the pictures from this experience, 3rd graders were introduced to the different shapes of triangles (right, acute, obtuse) as well as measurement (conversion from inches to feet). After the lesson was introduced, 4th graders invited us to their classroom to listen to the same topic using a much more complex lesson (finding the area of a triangle, calculating the sides, discussing perimeter, etc). 5th graders showed their expertise in applying the formula by participating in the lesson as well.
Science: Using the same flagpole experience as the foundation of our lesson, we will discover how simple machines work. We will use the flagpole as an example of a simple machine and discover how the pulley works to lift up the flag. Then we will discuss the other types of simple machines such as wheel and axle, inclined plane, wedge, screw, and lever.
Social Studies: Reviewing our community helpers unit, we will discuss the many different ways our Irving firefighters have helped our school community this week.
Religion: In honor of the Lady's feast day, we will learn about Our Lady of Guadalupe and Juan Diego. We will also participate in a variety of Nativity lessons campus wide.
Notes/Reminder:
1. Our Christmas party is this Friday! Please check your Tuesday folder regarding party information from Mrs. Griffin.
2. Looking for a free holiday event to take the whole family? Consider the ICE FEST 2011! The holiday celebration on Ice is at the Dr. Pepper Star Center in Euless on December 17th, 2011. Our very own 3rd grader Vanessa Griffin will skate alongside other semi-pro skaters such as US National Pair Champions Ashley Cain and Joshua Reagan. 2pm to 3pm: Free Public Skate 3:00 to 3:30 PM Free Skate with Santa 4:00 to 4:45 Free Holiday Ice Show 4:45 to 5:45 PM Skate with the Cast.
Have a blessed week!

3rd Grade Peek at the Week December 5th, 2011
Dear Parents,
Please take a look at this week's highlights:
Vocabulary/Spelling: Unit 15 due tomorrow in textbook. Vocabulary Quiz on Thursday. Spelling Test on Friday. Please note that this routine will change as we finish the textbook. We will begin to do dictionary skills using the words in the PSIA list possibly next month.
Reading: We are covering the following reading skills this week using the Essential Skills for Reading Success supplementary book to learn practical reading skills applied to all of the other subjects:
a) Identifying Sequence
b) Analyzing Language and Vocabulary
c) Analyzing Plot, Characters, Setting
d) Recognizing Cause and Effect
English: Chapter 10 Test on Possessive Nouns tomorrow. We had a whole class review today with sample sentences directly from the test. Study pg. 460 for the test.
Math: As we continue to drill math facts in multiplication and division, we are now learning multiplication with carrying. We used our Thinking Maps (Flow Map) to breakdown the multiple steps of multiplying larger numbers as well as sample problems from our ALEKS curriculum in the Smartboard. We will continue our progress in Math. Be on the lookout for a paper test on multiplication with larger numbers in the next couple of weeks.
Religion: We continue to cover topics over God's plan of salvation. From the Creation story to the Incarnation and Redemption, we will discuss how we can live our lives with the simplicity of loving God.
Notes/Reminder:
1. Toy Drive is this Thursday, December 8th. Please bring a new toy as an offering.
2. Early Dismissal on Friday, December 9th.
3. Last week's "Already the Best, Uplift The Rest" classroom guest speaker drew in a much larger crowd than our regular classroom audience. Brother Pio Maria from the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal spoke to all 3rd - 8th graders in the Parish Hall about his faith and devotion to God. Brother Pio Maria shared with us about embracing the simplicity of loving God. He shared his views on taking vows of the Franciscan life in a way that effectively challenges the worldly values in every age. The spiritual values that unite the friars are a personal commitment to Jesus Christ, and we were most truly blessed to have him share a life much different from ours. Best of all, the kids loved him and thought he was very funny! He was most definitely an uplifting speaker.

3rd Grade Peek at the Week News November 28, 2011
Dear 3rd Grade Parents,
Please take a look at this week's highlights:
Vocabulary/Spelling: Unit 14 due tomorrow in the textbook. Vocabulary Quiz on Thursday and Spelling Test on Friday.
Reading: We wrapped up a wonderful novel unit with some creative projects and dioramas of Wayside School! Visit the hallway and check out some of our creations. This week, we will begin using Essential Skills for Reading Success: Strategies for Reading Comprehension and Test Taking, a supplementary reading material provided by the Downes family. This book provides practical reading skill strategies such as recalling facts, main ideas, identifying sequences, analyzing narrative elements, recognizing cause and effect, drawing conclusions, and making inferences. Combining our prior knowledge with the Thinking Maps strategies, we discovered that we already know at least 8 out of the 14 skills introduced in the textbook. Today, the class took an active part in their own learning by identifying which Thinking Map to use to analyze the Table of Contents in the textbook.
English: We did very well in our last English/Grammar test. We will continue with lessons on nouns with a focus on singular and plural possessive nouns.
Math: We are almost finished with our Math Multiplication and Division drill and will continue in our learning mode in ALEKS. This week's focus is the ALEKS QuickTables practice (using the 10 key)Stay tuned for more instructions regarding our "MyPie" learning mode.
Notes/Reminder:
1. Tomorrow Mrs. Grimm and Mrs. Hays will conduct an all-school liturgy practice to go over some of the changes in the responses for Friday's Mass.
Have a wonderful week!

Dear 3rd Grade Parents,
Please take a look at this week's highlights:
Vocabulary/Spelling: Unit 13 workbook pages due tomorrow. Today we are reviewing using word maps to identify synonyms, antonyms, definitions, and usage. Vocabulary Quiz on Thursday. Spelling Test on Friday.
Reading: We have finished our unit novel Sideways Stories from Wayside School. The reader response packet is due in class today. Please allow students to bring materials from home (no need to buy) to create a diorama of the novel's setting and scene as our classroom project.
English: We are reviewing Nouns: Common vs Proper and Abbreviations and Titles. We will have a test tomorrow over Chapter 7. Study page 458 in the textbook.
Math: We finally finished reciting our Math multiplication facts from 2's through 12's! See daily grades for the recitation entered in your parent Renweb account. This week, we will practice written mixed multiplication with some division, so expect to find more drills for homework and class work. We will also return to the ALEKS lessons using QuickTables for more Math drills practice.
Religion: This week, we will use sources from the Faith and Life series to understand the following concepts: God is eternal, God is almighty, all holy, all wise, and all perfect. We aim to have the children understand that through God's perfections, He made each person unique (cross-curricular tie-in with the Bucket Fillers vs. Bucket Dippers character building lesson).
We are well into our 2nd quarter in our grades and class work. It is important to keep reminding our children that our classroom performance and our work habits are reflective of our report card grades. Let's keep the kids (and each other) motivated to work hard!
Have a blessed week!

3rd Grade Peek at the Week News November 7, 2011
Dear 3rd Grade Parents,
Please take a look at this week's highlights:
Vocabulary/Spelling: Unit 12 textbook pages due tomorrow. Vocabulary Quiz on Thursday. Spelling Test on Friday.
Reading: Students are still reading Sideways Stories from Wayside School and completing interactive notes together in small groups. They are enjoying analyzing different characters from the book using a cross-curricular character building lesson they recently learned. Have You Filled a Bucket Today by Carol McCloud (http://www.bucketfillers101.com/).
English: We are learning two different types of nouns: common vs. proper nouns. We are also learning the grammar mechanics of abbreviations and titles. We continue to apply our grammar mechanics into writing.
Math: Recitation of multiplication facts continued. Study for tomorrow's quiz 11's and 12's. Ask your child if he/she still needs to make up other math facts quiz. Today we will do a mixed multiplication drill called Mad Minute. They are given a mix of 50 multiplication facts and they are timed to see if they can recall the facts quickly and accurately. Tonight, they will need to do a Mad Minute drill with a parent or guardian. The parent/guardian will time the child (2 minutes for 50 facts). After two minutes, students need to record how many facts they completed correctly. Then they may fill in the rest of the facts in a different color pencil or pen. Parent signature required for verification.
Science: This week, students are given reading passages from a weekly reader newspaper. We have read together in class on Matter. We will have discussions and writing prompts as well as comprehension questions together in class. Please encourage your class to be attentive during these discussions, especially when the teacher announces that they will need to listen to be able to successfully answer the comprehension questions.
Notes/Reminder:
We have had two lovely guest speakers come to us recently to discuss healthy eating habits and nutrition. Mrs. Garcia and Mrs. Jeanne Gay recently spoke to the 3rd graders. Some key points:
*Healthy habits and healthy choices to respect and protect our bodies
*Taking pride in our bodies as they are gifts from God
*Learned a song called "Healthy is Good for Me"
Mrs. Jeanne Gay is a registered Dietitian with a Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition and Food Sciences and holds a Master's Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. She works mainly in Rehab and Long Term Care providing nutritional support for patients healing from surgery, strokes, and cancer treatments. She loves children and holding other people's children. She has one son at Holy Family, Everett in 6th grade. Her husband Tony is regularly seen playing bass guitar during Friday Mass or at TYM on Sunday Evening. Mrs. Jeanne Gay is a volunteer for the Parish Council at HFN, as wellas in PTO events, PSIA, Running club, and other events at the church and school.

We will also try to revise our work to produce a more polished final product. Tonight, we will work on our story organizer for homework.
Math: Using our ALEKS online Math program, we will review and increase mastery rounding whole numbers to the nearest ten or hundred to approximate reasonable results in estimating sums and differences this week. We will begin our new chapter in our textbook to introduce multiplication concepts and facts. In our ALEKS Quick Tables online program, we will practice recalling Math facts.
Reading: We continue with our listening comprehension practice using our new novel unit Sideways Stories from Wayside School written by Newberry Medal winner author Louis Sachar. This time, we will use reader response activities, compositions, and other projects to assess listening comprehension skills.
Religion: In preparation for Priesthood Sunday (October 30th, 2011), students will learn the role of a priest in a community. 3rd graders will discover that every priest is called to serve God's people in word and deed. The students will begin to understand that priests are called to be SERVANT LEADERS who serve the people of God. Some of our activities will include: reading the Gospel and applying them to character building themes such as proper attitudes toward our religious practices, encouragement, keeping God's covenant, and appreciating our very own servant leader, Father Jerry. In this lesson, we will begin to develop a deeper awareness of his role as our servant leader at Holy Family.
Notes/Reminder:
1. Priesthood Sunday is October 30th, 2011: Priesthood Sunday, the last Sunday of October, is a special day set aside to honor the priesthood in the United States. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church as a central one. We will do a few classroom activities to reflect upon the services of our parish priest, Father Jerry and his role to our community. In addition to our classroom activities, we will participate in a schoolwide project in honor of Father Jerry for Priesthood Sunday. Our class will collect coins beginning this week for a gift to present to our priest. Please allow your child to bring his/her spare change for this project.
2. 1st Quarter ends on October 25th. Report cards coming soon.
3. Spaghetti Dinner and Talent Show this Friday evening! Please join us in the Parish Hall for this exciting event. Our 3rd graders will perform live with a short skit, song ("Celebration"), and dance. The kids are very excited to share how they celebrate in the classroom. They may dress in simple costume with a 70's/disco theme. If you need help or have questions regarding this matter, please contact Shelly Griffin or Virginia Gonzalez.

Some helpful tips to encourage your child:
1. Explain and reassure to him/her that these tests are not for a grade in the report card, but encourage your child to do his/her best.
2. Encourage your child to listen carefully to all test-taking directions given by the teacher.
3. See that your child gets his/her regular amount of sleep before the tests and is well-rested.
4. Make sure your child eats his/her usual breakfast on each day of testing week. Hunger can detract from a good test performance.
In class, we do our very best to be at ease and relaxed while taking our tests. In addition to our school-wide morning prayer, we will say a short prayer of petition daily before taking our test.
Notes/Reminder:
We will begin practicing our classroom Talent Show performance this week. The performance will include a skit, song, and dance incorporating our classroom theme. More details to come.

Listening, Learning, and Having Fun!
Our first guest speaker, Mr. Michael Medina, discussed the importance of time management skills to become better students. We also had fun posing for pictures!
3rd Grade Peek at the Week News October 3rd, 2011
Dear Parents,
Please take a look at this week's highlights:
Vocabulary/Spelling: Vocabulary 8 Unit pages are due tomorrow. Vocabulary Quiz on Thursday and Spelling Test on Friday. Last week's Vocabulary Quiz scores were outstanding, and the class average was a 96%! The online component for our textbook we used in class have been very helpful for the kids when learning and retaining information. We will continue this routine on the Smartboard until we master this skill.
Reading: Next week is Achievement Testing week. Like many Catholic schools in the Diocese, Holy Family of Nazareth uses the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) for standardized test scores. We employ the series of tests from 1st through 8th grade to gain information about classes and students for instructional planning, to supplement teacher observations regarding abilities, and to establish a basis of student performance evaluation. This week, we are using the ITBS practice materials during our Reading class to help us feel more comfortable using these test formats. A list of the content areas for testing is below:
Vocabulary
Reading Comprehension
Spelling
Capitalization
Punctuation
Usage and Expression
Math Concepts and Estimation
Math Problem Solving and Data Interpretation
Math Computation
Social Studies
Science
Maps and Diagrams
Reference Materials
English: We will begin to apply our grammar skills into our writing workshop sessions this week and begin to analyze parts of a personal narrative essay. We will attempt to complete our very first essays using personal narrative topics. A guide for this lesson is in the textbook, and we will use our daily class work time to begin understanding the written word.
Math: We continue to use our school-wide (grades 3 and up) ALEKS Math program to help guide us into covering various Math topics that match the standards-based curriculum in 3rd grade. Your child should have shown you several copies of day-to-day specific instructions I have sent home in the past two weeks. We are covering a review on Place Value (with expanded numbers), Money, Addition and Subtraction (with regrouping and borrowing). In class, we do a mixed review of our Subtraction chapter (aligned with our textbook schedule) on subtraction across zero, including word problems. In computer lab, we will continue to practice our Math facts in addition and subtraction using keyboard, and they are timed in the ALEKS program. This week, students will have homework using the ALEKS program. In class, the students will experience a mixture of Math worksheets in both paper-pencil and digital formats.
Religion: We began Chapter 6 in our textbook, "The Death and Resurrection of Jesus." So far, we have discussed the meaning of hope and different symbols we use for hope. We examined our faith by discussing that Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins, and God raised Jesus from the dead. The cross is a symbol of hope because Jesus won for us God's promise of life after death. The rainbow is another symbol of hope. After the rain, the rainbow shows God's promise of life. We designed our own rainbows as our own personal reminder of God's promise of everlasting life.
Notes/Reminder:
1. Feast of St. Francis celebration today! We will have a short prayer service with the blessing of the pets at 2:30 in church. The students will bring pictures of their pets and celebrate St. Francis' love of animals.
2. Spirit Day on Thursday. Dress code: Plain blue jeans, sneakers, and a Spirit shirt.
3. Early dismissal Friday (noon).
4. No School Monday.
5. Achievement Testing next week!

3rd Grade Peek at the Week News September 25, 2011
Dear 3rd Grade Parents,
Please take a look at this week's highlights:
Vocabulary/Spelling: Finish Unit 7 in the textbook (due tomorrow). Vocabulary Quiz on Thursday. Spelling Test on Friday. We are spending more time in class using multisensory techniques to learn our words and use them in the correct context. We say the word, we see the picture, we use the word in a sentence, and we use graphic organizers on the Smartboard to help us learn and retain the information.
Math: 3rd graders are still in the experimental stages of using the ALEKS, or Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Space. Aleks is a web-based program that uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a Math course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics he or she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a Math course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. It is important that your child is able to access the program from his or her home computer, as we will regularly use this in class and at home. 3rd graders are currently assigned two ALEKS homework. "Quiz 2" homework is due tomorrow. "Quick Tables" Math facts practice is due on Thursday, September 29th. Instructions for tonight's ALEKS homework are sent home today.
English: We are currently reviewing our previous learning such as: Sentences, Kinds of Sentences, Punctuating Sentences, Complete and Simple Subjects, Nouns in Subjects, Combining Sentences, Complete and Simple Predicates, Verbs in Predicates, and Compound Predicates.
Notes/Reminder:
Our first guest speaker last Friday was a success! Special thanks to Mr. Michael Medina for speaking to the class on time management, organization, and healthy habits to become a successful student. Pictures to follow. If you would like to be a guest speaker about a particular topic that might be helpful to our class, please contact Virginia Gonzalez to schedule a session: virginia.gonzalez@tx.rr.com.

Peek at the Week News September 19, 2011
Dear 3rd Grade Parents,
Please take a look at this week's highlights:
Spelling/Vocabulary: Unit 6 is due tomorrow. Thursday is the vocabulary quiz. Friday is the spelling test. Some classroom activities we do for practice: online touchscreen Smartboard games, Family Feud, and practice quiz.
Reading: We are finishing Ramona Quimby, Age 8 as an ongoing assessment in listening skills. We will begin Reading Skills practice (recalling facts and details, identifying main ideas, identifying sequence, analyzing language and vocabulary) this week. We have just finished our beginning of the year DIBELS testing (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literary Skills). This reading assessment tool is an individually-administered oral reading test used to measure reading fluency. The beginning of the year benchmark goal is to read 77 words per minute in 3rd grade. Please see the printed report in tonight's Tuesday folder for your child's result.
Math: We have completed the first chapter in the book, and are well into the second chapter, "Addition." Skills in chapter 2 include: more than three addends, regrouping with larger numbers and word problems. We are also using standardized testing practice materials "Strand by Strand" in preparation for the October achievement testing. Last week, our strand focus was on Numbers, Operations, and Quantitative Reasoning. This week our strand focus is on Mathematical Processes and Tools. In addition to our skills practice, 3rd graders are also getting a tutorial in our web-based Math program ALEKS during computer lab time. Whole group instruction for 3rd grade Math is our focus for this quarter. Later on this year, students will have the opportunity to learn via computer and web-based instructions.
English: Using our Thinking Maps learning strategy, we were able to break down every word in a sentence and identify their parts (subject, predicate, helping verb, noun, adverb, adjectives). We used a classification visual aid to do this (similar to diagramming sentences). This week, we will begin Chapter 5 "Complete Sentences."
Religion: This week, our focus is on Chapter 5: "The Holy Family." In this chapter, children learn about the Holy Family, Mary, Joseph and Jesus. The children read about how Mary and Joseph shared their love of God with Jesus. Mary and Joseph are models for all parents.
Social Studies: We just completed a very fun Geography project in class. Students examined the map of the United States and created their own jigsaw puzzles in class. See us in action in the pictures posted below in the blog.
Notes/Reminder:
1. The homework issues/defaults seem to be improving, as predicted. While I am no longer checking their assignment pad/planners daily, each student is still expected to write down their assignments daily. As parents, you might want to periodically check if your child is following through on his/her responsibilities.
2. We are expecting a guest speaker Michael Medina in our classroom on Friday, September 23rd. He is a college student who will speak to my class about the following important life skills:
His short bio is below:
3. Guest Speaker Interest: If you are interested in becoming a guest speaker, please submit a short summary of your area of interest via email ppulido@hfns.com. Scheduling is usually on Fridays from 2pm to 3pm and you may contact one of my homeroom parents (Virginia Gonzalez) to schedule a session.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please email me ppulido@hfns.com
Have a wonderful week!

Peek at the Week News August 29th, 2011
Dear 3rd grade Parents,
Please take a look at this week's highlights:
Vocabulary/Spelling: Unit 3 pp. 27-33 due on Wednesday. Vocabulary Review Game on Wednesday. Practice quiz for homework on Wednesday. Unit 3 Vocabulary Quiz (multiple choice with reading passage) on Thursday. Study for Friday's Spelling Unit 3 Test.
Reading: We are practicing listening and comprehension skills when the teacher reads a novel aloud. Our first classroom novel is Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary. We are learning the three narrative elements in fiction (plot, characters, setting), and we are monitoring our comprehension.
English: We finished our first unit on Punctuating Sentences (statement, command, exclamation, question). This week, we will begin a new unit to help us learn how to identify the two parts of a complete sentence (subject and predicate) on Chapter 2.
Math: We are learning Place Value in larger numbers (up to millions) and completed a fun activity using our tech gadgets in the classroom (Smartboard and Elmo). Some of us have completed our initial assessment test using the ALEKS web-based Math program in computer lab. The rest of us will complete them this week, as we schedule our new lab time. After everyone has been assessed, then they will learn the steps on how to log in online and learn this tool.
Religion: In Chapter 2, we will explore the meaning of Divine Providence as God's caring love for all His creation. We will discuss the Scripture passage based on Matthew 6:25-32: "Do not worry about what you will eat or drink. Do not worry about what you will wear...Do not worry. Your heavenly Father knows what you need." Then we will share what we think is most powerful in that message.
Science: Our second unit, "The Tools of Science" shows us different kinds of tools we use in everyday life. We used our Thinking Maps to describe everyday Science tools that are helpful and useful in our lives. As soon as we finish our unit and discussion, we will begin our fun project called "Invention Convention" and the kids will have a chance to work on their projects in class.
Notes/Reminder:
1. Thursday, Sept. 1st: Spirit Day. Students may wear their Spirit Day shirts with blue jeans and tennis shoes/sneakers.
2. Friday, Sept. 2nd: Early Dismissal at noon. Teacher In-service
3. Monday, Sept. 5th: Labor Day All School Holiday
4. Wednesday, Sept. 7th: Magazine Drive Ends
5. Class work issues: It takes some time to adjust to the new routine in a new teacher's classroom. I do give the students the benefit of the doubt, but the work that is not finished in class must be completed and turned in the next day, on top of their regular homework. We will work diligently in developing good work habits both in class and at home. I am confident that we will see results at least by the end of 1st quarter. I thank all of the parents for their patience and cooperation.
As always, if there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me: ppulido@hfns.com.
Have a blessed week!
Love,
Mrs. Pia Villanueva-Pulido

"God you are the life that leve inside ov us."

Peek at the Week News August 22nd, 2011
Dear 3rd grade Parents,
Please take a look at this week's highlights:
Vocabulary and Spelling:
Unit 2 pp. 16-25 in Vocabulary Workshop book is due Wednesday. Students are given class time to get started and do the rest for homework on Monday and Tuesday evenings (this is the weekly routine). All of the unit pages (Unit 2 this week) due on Wednesday. Vocabulary Quiz Unit 2 on Thursday (multiple choice format, 10 questions). Spelling Test (words are taken from the Vocabulary Workshop book, total of 20 words, including the synonyms and antonyms page) is on Friday.
Math:
Your child now has a username and password to log on to the ALEKS web-based Math program. While we are waiting on computer lab scheduling, we are reviewing Place Value and Ordering Numbers in our textbooks. This week, we will learn and review counting patterns and understanding place value in larger numbers, such as ten thousands and hundred thousands.
English/Grammar:
Chapter 1 Unit Test on Thursday (Sentences: 4 Different Types, Punctuation, Capitalization). Study for test by taking your hardcover book home and do pg. 454 for test.
Religion:
As we wrap up our Chapter 1 Unit, "God Speaks To Us," we are also getting more comfortable speaking to God during our prayers. Our afternoon prayer routine (The Prayer Corner Ceremony) allows us to speak to God in our natural way. This week, we will begin Chapter 2 "God the Creator of Heaven and Earth."
Science:
This week's unit introduces the tools of science, how they are used, and the concepts of scientific inquiry, scientific method, measurement, and scientific problem solving. We will discover how everyday tools at home and at school are scientific tools to help us. Next week, we will begin our first project called, "Invention Convention."
Social Studies:
This week's unit focus is "Changes to the Land Bring Changes for People." Class activities include reading, discussion, review, and group work in class.
Notes/Reminder:
1. August 24th is Back to School Night! Please join us. You will have a chance to visit my classroom as I discuss policies and procedures, classroom activities, and many more.
2. Weekly Routine to note: Vocabulary Units are assigned weekly on Mondays. Students have two nights (Monday and Tuesday) to finish all of the pages in the unit as they are due on Wednesday. We will play a review game on Wednesday and take a practice quiz (either in class or at home). Vocabulary Quiz is on Thursday. Spelling Test is Friday (words are taken from the Vocabulary Workshop book). Later on this quarter, we will also have weekly or biweekly quizzes in Science, Social Studies, and Religion. Most of the quizzes are "open book" as I am testing for comprehension. Students will need to keep their weekly newspapers in the home folders so that they can use them as reference when taking a quiz.
3. Thinking Maps: Last week, we learned how to use a Circle Map (used when defining words or topics in context). This week, we will learn how to use a Bubble Map (used for describing topics or context, mainly using adjectives). These Thinking Maps are helpful visual learning tools for many students. They help retain information and organize thoughts.
4. Assignment Pads/Student Planners: We are using the school-issued student planners to help us remember our assignments. 3rd graders are required to write down every assignment written on the board in class (word for word). In the first few weeks (possibly even in the first two months), I will regularly check if they are writing down the correct information. You as parents can verify by signing your name in the planner each day. This will tell me that your child is bringing home the appropriate materials for homework. It will also help us identify organizational problems, listening skills, or any other issues that may arise at the very beginning of the year. It is normal for a 3rd grader to forget assignments or write down the wrong information in the student planner for the first few weeks. By the end of the first month, however, it should be routine for all students.
5. Thank you for your cooperation! I realize that the classroom policies and procedures may seem like a lot, but very soon, we will get used to how our classroom operates. We will have a great year, and we will learn so much.
Have a blessed week! I hope you enjoyed the first day of school classroom picture posted on the blog.
Love,
Mrs. Pia Villanueva-Pulido
